ICAR organized programme under Tribal Sub Plan (TSP) and Maize Production Improvement Project.

ICAR RC NEH, Arunachal Pradesh Centre, Basar organized a mega event under Tribal Sub plan (TSP) and Promoting Improved technology of Maize Production in NEH Region-Arunachal Pradesh (Maize Project) on 20th June, 2019 in Conference Hall, Trainees’ Hostel, ICAR, Gori Farm. A total of 35 farmers were registered in the programme. The programme started with welcome address by Dr. Rajesh A. Alone, Scientist, (Agroforestry), ICAR, Basar. After which, Dr. H. Kalita, Joint Director, ICAR, Basar who is the programme leader addressed the farmers on importance of low cost polyhouse for year round vegetable cultivation in Basar area. He added growing of crops in polyhouse will also tackle the problem of crops damages during rainy season and importance of adoption of improved technology to increase maize production in Basar area. Further, the Chief Guest of the programme, Shri. Hento Karga, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Lepa Rada district enticed the farmers to make agriculture a source of income and suggested that rural youth should adopt agriculture as a business rather than migrate to city in search of petty jobs. He also shared his observation of Basar being blessed with fertile soil where climate is suitable for maize production. Following the speech of honourable Chief Guest, 30 low cost polyhouse, 3 vermibed units and 3 jalkhund units under TSP and 25 quintals of enriched organic manure under Maize Project were distributed to the farmers by Shri Hento Karga and Dr. H. kalita.In the technical session, Dr. H. Kalita mentioned the different ways to manage insect pest infestation in maize production and suitable technological options for crop production in Basar area, Dr. Doni Jini gave a lecture on livestock farming and management, Dr. Rajesh A. Alone described the details on establishment and maintenance of low cost polyhouse, Dr. Jitendra Kumar, Scientist (Soil Science), ICAR Basar, explained about organic methods to improve the soil physical and chemical properties and Dr. Ampee Tasung, Scientist (Soil Science), ICAR Basar showed the farmers how to carry out soil sampling for laboratory analysis. With this the technical session came to an end. After lunch, the programme resumed with interaction session between scientist and farmers. The interaction session turned out remarkable as all members in the hall actively participated in the discussion about insect pest management in maize, swine flu and FMD management, cautionary procedure during low cost polyhouse installation, soil sampling procedure and soil nutrient management. At the end vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Doni. Jini. Before departure a representative of the farmers stood up to appreciate ICAR Basar for the training-cum-input distribution programme and acknowledged the fact that they were enlightened about the potential of agriculture in improving Tribal Farmers livelihood and the various technology to improve Maize Production. He also requested that this informative programme should be conducted again in the future.
